The name Lal Mahal literally means the ‘Red Colourd Palace’. It was constructed in the early 17th century C.E. when young Shivaji and his mother Jijabai stayed in the city for some time. Shivaji’s father Shajajiraje Bhosale had ordered Dadoji Kondadev to construct this palace and look after the education of Shivaji. The original palace cannot be seen here today but a replica of it has been constructed by the Pune Municipal Corporation. The modern building has a museum displaying the events in the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji. It is located in the heart of the city near Shaniwarwada. (Timings – 9 am to 1 pm, 4 pm to 8 pm.
